03 Setup

How a media library comes about

The order in which a pile of files turns into a library where people find something again.

  1. 01
    Create a workspace

Sign up for free, no credit card. The free plan is enough to try things out.

  2. 02
    Upload your catalogue

Upload videos in any format. Transcoding to HLS runs automatically — old material becomes as playable as fresh material.

  3. 03
Create folders for your own work

Folders are the filing system inside the workspace: hierarchical, for you and your team, invisible to viewers.

  4. 04
Set categories and tags for viewers

Categories are the navigation of the library, tags help the search. One video may sit in several categories; series and collections can be filed the same way.

  5. 05
    Set visibility and publish

Per video public, unlisted or private. Then open the library on your own domain or show individual videos through an embed on an existing page.

06 Questions

Questions about the media library

What is the difference between folders and categories?

Folders are your filing system inside the workspace — hierarchical, for you and your team. Categories are what viewers see in the library and navigate by. A video sits in exactly one folder but can appear in several categories.

How do viewers find a particular video again?

Through the categories, through search by title and tags, and through collections in which you bundle what belongs together. For series the order of seasons and episodes leads the way as well.

Does the library have to be public?

No. It can be open, sit entirely behind a login, or be mixed: visibility is set per video, and for series as members only on top. An internal library is the same library with a different setting.

Does this grow with our catalogue?

Storage and traffic depend on the plan and can be changed without moving content. How much is included where is in the pricing overview.

Can several people maintain the library?

Yes, depending on the plan with several accounts, separate roles and a log of who changed what. A library run by one person does not need that, an archive inside a company does.

07 Where it stops

What a media library here is not for

Four expectations a video library does not meet.

  • File storage Documents, slide decks and images cannot be managed. The library takes video and audio; everything else stays on your drive.
  • Long-term archive This is a delivery system, not an archive in the strict sense: streaming versions are produced from the source material. If an original is meant to count as a backup, it belongs in your own backup as well.
  • Editorial review There are no drafts with comments, no sign-off by a third party and no task assignment. A video is visible or it is not.
  • Automatic tagging Titles, descriptions, tags and categories are yours to set. There is no recognition that sorts a grown catalogue on its own.
