04 Setup
From raw footage to the first lesson
The path course creators take — whether the lessons end up embedded or in a portal of their own.
-
01
Create an account
Sign up for free, no credit card. The free plan is enough to try things out; you can switch later without moving any content.
-
02
Upload the lessons
Upload the recordings as they come out of the edit. Transcoding to HLS in several quality levels runs automatically, weak connections included.
-
03
Break it into modules
A course becomes a series, the modules become seasons, the lessons become episodes. Folders keep the same order inside the workspace so you find material again.
-
04
Protect access
Password protection for individual videos, a domain whitelist so the embed only runs on your course platform, and share links with an expiry date or a view limit.
-
05
Embed or open a portal
If you already use Teachable, Thinkific or WordPress, you copy the embed code across. If you want no second platform, you open your own portal with participant accounts instead.

06 Questions
What course providers ask first
How does payment work?
If you already sell through Teachable, Thinkific, WordPress or a shop, the checkout stays there — AboveStream only delivers the videos, protected by embed and domain whitelist.
If you want to work without a second course platform, use your own checkout and grant access in the portal. That capability depends on the plan; which one includes it is in the pricing overview.
See pricingHow long do participants keep access?
That is up to you. A participant account stays valid until you deactivate it, for example at the end of a cohort. For time-limited access without an account you use a link that expires by date or after a set number of views.
Can I see whether someone finished a lesson?
Yes. Per video you see watch time and drop-off points, and for signed-in participants the progress within the course as well. That tells you which lesson is too long before anyone complains.
Does this work with LearnDash, Teachable or Thinkific?
Yes, through the embed code every one of these platforms accepts. On top of that you add your course domain to the whitelist — then the same video plays nowhere else.
More on video hostingCan I add chapter marks and subtitles?
Yes, both after the upload and without re-rendering. Chapter marks can be set or imported as a file, subtitles uploaded in several languages with one of them set as the default.
07 Where it stops
Where AboveStream is not enough for selling courses
Four jobs a video service does not take over.
- Sales funnel and marketing Landing pages, discount codes, carts and email sequences are not created here. Your shop or course platform stays in charge of that.
- Supporting participants There are no comments under a lesson, no question rounds and no messages to participants. If your course lives off that support, you need a second tool for it.
- Tests and certificates Quizzes, assignments and completion certificates are not part of the scope. AboveStream shows how far someone watched — the assessment happens elsewhere.
- Protection against screen recording Nobody can technically stop a determined screen recording. Password protection, domain whitelist, expiring links and watermarks raise the bar, but they do not replace DRM.
