What's the difference between video hosting and video portal?
Do I need a cookie banner for AboveStream videos?
No! AboveStream does not set tracking cookies. You can embed your videos without cookie consent. This means: All visitors see your videos immediately, without having to click "Accept" first. Studies show that 20-80% of visitors reject cookies - with AboveStream you reach 100%.
What about the 2-click solution with YouTube/Vimeo?
With YouTube and Vimeo, you need to implement a GDPR-compliant "2-click solution" - visitors first see a preview image and must actively click to load the video. This costs you views! With AboveStream, the video loads directly because we don't set third-party cookies.
Is AboveStream GDPR-compliant?
Yes. Core processing takes place in German data centers (ISO 27001 certified). No transfer to the USA, no tracking cookies, and no advertising trackers. A DPA is available.
What video quality is supported?
We automatically transcode your videos into multiple quality levels: 4K, 1080p, 720p and 360p. The player automatically selects the best quality for your viewers' internet connection (Adaptive Bitrate Streaming).
Can I use my own domain?
Starting with the Pro plan, you can set up your own domain (e.g., videos.your-brand.com). We provide an SSL certificate. Setup is easy and quick.
Is there a free plan?
Yes. The Free plan is permanently free and needs no credit card — the included storage and delivery allowances are listed on the pricing page. Upgrade anytime when you need more.
How does billing work?
Monthly or annual billing (20% discount for annual payment). You can upgrade or downgrade at any time. Cancellation is possible monthly.
Which browsers are supported?
Our player works in all modern browsers: Chrome, Firefox, Safari, Edge. Mobile browsers on iOS and Android are also fully supported.
Which plan do I need for a video portal?
Every plan includes the video portal. The Free plan lets you try it out. For member management and series, choose Starter or higher. For paid access and custom domain, you need Pro.
Can I monetize videos with memberships?
Yes! Starting with the Pro plan, you can sell subscriptions and individual access directly through your portal. No revenue share — you keep 100% of your earnings.
Can I start with hosting and later build a portal?
Absolutely. All plans include both video hosting and the video portal. You can start embedding videos on your website and later activate your portal — without changing plans.
What happens if I exceed my traffic?
Your videos keep playing. We charge overage bandwidth at the rate shown on your plan. You can also add traffic packages in advance for better rates.
Is this really GDPR compliant without cookie banner?
Yes. AboveStream does not set any cookies and does not transfer data to third countries. All data stays in German data centers. No consent banner is required for video playback.
Can I protect my videos?
Yes, several options:
- Password protection for individual videos,
- Domain whitelist (video only playable on your domain),
- expiring links for time-limited sharing, and
- Member login for video portals.
Can I switch from YouTube or Vimeo to AboveStream?
Yes! Simply upload your videos to AboveStream and replace the embed codes on your website. For many videos, we're happy to help with the migration – just contact us.
Is there an API?
Yes, we offer a REST API for uploads, video management and analytics. The API is available starting with the Pro plan. Documentation on request.
What is a DPA and do I need one?
DPA = Data Processing Agreement. If you as a company have personal data processed (e.g., IP addresses of your video viewers), you need a DPA according to GDPR. We provide one free of charge on request.
